Denmark and Lithuania

Denmark and Lithuania have good and close relations in terms of politics, military, economy and culture. Denmark was one of the first countries to re-establish diplomatic relations with Lithuania and the two other Baltic countries on 24 August 1991. Denmark and the other Nordic countries provided comprehensive moral, political and economic support to Lithuania after the independence.

Since 1991 Denmark has supported Lithuania’s integration into the Euro-Atlantic cooperation. This goal was reached with Lithuania’s accession to EU and NATO and superseded by close cooperation in these institutions.

Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II was the first monarch to come to Lithuania and the other two Baltic countries on a state visit in the summer of 1992. The Queen last time visited Lithuania in 2009 in connection with the celebration of Lithuania’s 1000 years anniversary. In 1996 a Lithuanian state visit was held in Denmark. Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, escorted by the Foreign Affairs Minister Linas Linkevicius, was in Denmark on an official visit on 22 January 2013. On 8-10 October 2013 His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Frederik, escorted by the Minister for Energy, Utilities and Climate Martin Lidegaard, was on an official visit to Lithuania in connection with business promotion events. Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess Mary last visited Lithuania on 14 September 2015 as a patron of the World Health Organization. In connection with the visit the Crown Princess met with the Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite.

The latest Prime Minister visit to Lithuania was carried out by Helle Thorning-Schmidt in October 2011, just before the Danish EU Presidency, during which she conversed with both the President and the former Prime Minister (Andrius Kubilius, conservative).  The Danish Prime Minister also participated in the Eastern Partnership Summit held in Vilnius on 28-29 November 2013 during the Lithuanian EU Presidency. The former Lithuanian Prime Minister (Kubilius) visited Denmark in September 2010. The former Danish Foreign Affairs Minister Villy Søvndal was in Lithuania on a working visit on 12 April 2013. The former European Affairs Minister Nicolai Wammen came to Lithuania on an official visit on 28-29 May 2013. The former Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark Mette Gjerskov together with the Environment and Food Committee was on a 3-day visit to Lithuania on 17-19 June 2013. Lastly the former Defence Minister Nicolai Wammen visited Lithuania on 17 June 2014, where he visited the military exercise Saber Strike, in which around 900 Danish soldiers with their equipment, including tanks and armoured personnel carriers, participated. During the visit the Defence Minister met with his Lithuanian counterpart.
