Increased focus on defence and security in the Baltic countries

After Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea, the focus once again shifted towards the Eastern NATO members – including Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – and the threat to their security.

Since 2014, Denmark has been engaged in efforts to increase security in the Baltic States. Denmark is actively participating in the NATO Reassurance Measures Program and thereby supports the Baltic States with a periodic presence of Danish ground troops.

Furthermore, Danish F16 fighter aircraft help enforcing the sovereignty of Baltic airspace through the Baltic Air Policing Mission and surveillance flights are carried out in the Baltic Sea. Finally the Danish navy’s activities in the Baltic Sea have increased.
