State visit to Lithuania

The days of 28-29 January 2026, Their Majesties The King and The Queen will pay a state visit to Lithuania. The King and The Queen will be accompanied by Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen, Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen, as well as Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard.

Denmark has strong historical ties to Lithuania and established diplomatic relations for the first time in 1921. Denmark never recognised the Soviet annexation and, in August 1991, was among the first to re-establish diplomatic relations following the breakaway from the Soviet Union. The relationship between Denmark and Lithuania is characterised by joint interests, mutual respect, and a shared vision of a free, secure and prosperous Europe.

The upcoming state visit will reaffirm the longstanding and close relations between Denmark and Lithuania, which are not only based on geographical proximity, but also on a set of strong shared values. The visit will help to underscore the joint European commitment and the continuing support for Ukraine.

The King and The Queen have been invited by the President of Lithuania, His Excellency Gitanas Nausėda. There will be particular focus on defence preparedness, including visits to the military barracks of the Lithuanian home guard and the voluntary defence force Riflemen’s Union. Among other things, The King and The Queen and The President will participate in the opening of a business forum focused on energy security and defence.

The Official programme also include a wreath-laying ceremony at Antakalnis Cemetery, a state dinner, and meetings with The President and First Lady, the prime minister and the parliament. The state visit concludes with visits to a basketball academy and the opening of the exhibition “Friends in Need” about Denmark and Lithuania at the National Library in Vilnius.
